In my next column I'm going to put across animal clinic to you. We have all said before relating to animal hospital because there are banks that will lend you money for an animal emergency clinic like that. I'm not feeling any younger. That would have been appreciation enough, but the Doctors led private tours of the back rooms of the facility, that were filled with more surprises. The person saw the beagle as it was hit by a car in Bethel, on Ohio Route 125 near the McDonalds. The close by Ladera Township has the most state of the art veterinary clinic in the State. These signs will let people know of their presence in the area.

Outdoors: snowy owl population on the rise

1329908947 63 Outdoors: snowy owl population on the rise

If you are driving through the countryside and see a white object on a fence post, it is obviously not snow this winter. Take a closer look and you might be lucky enough to see a snowy owl. these big white birds are more easily seen this year due to the lack of snow on the ground.each winter we get a few of these white visitors from the Arctic but this year reports indicate that there are many more than usual. No one is certain why, but an abnormally large number of these fascinating birds have been seen all the way from the Great Lakes to Massachusetts. Some biologists point out that last year was a very successful year for hatching and an unusually high number of young birds survived. This was directly connected to the large lemming population in the Arctic, which is the main source of food for these birds. Biologists theorize that many of these young males have migrated south to feed this winter.in this area, the owls feed on a variety of small mammals and birds, especially voles (meadow mice) and geese. Good riddance to both. with the scarcity of snow the hunting should be easier for the owls.By contrast, several years ago the deep snow throughout much of New York State sheltered the mice and voles and a large number of barred owls, one of our local owls, starved to death. Unlike most owls, the snowy owl and the grey owl feed a lot during the daylight.the population of owls, like most other predators, is dependent on food supply and availability. they often migrate when there is a relative scarcity of food, or in this case a higher population of predators in relation to food supply. at times when there is insufficient food they will have smaller broods, fewer young will survive and many adults will starve.Snowy owls are interesting creatures. they perch on posts or dead tree snags and rely on their excellent sense of hearing and sight to pinpoint their prey. Take a drive or walk in the country, be observant and you may experience the rare treat of seeing one of our visitors from the north.CNY Sportsman of the Year: Congratulations to Andy Jeski. the Central New York Sportsman Show announced Jeski as the 2012 Sportsman of the Year last Saturday. each year, the show judges select a winner from among the many nominations submitted from outdoor enthusiasts across central New YorkJeski has worked diligently to promote conservation and outdoor sports through his work with youngsters and handicapped sportsmen. he has also set a good example of ethics and sportsmanship.he has been active in this role for many years and has never sought recognition, only the benefit of others who enjoy the outdoors.as an active member and president, of SHOTS (Sportsmen Helping others Through Sharing) he has helped youngsters build turkey calls, and let them take them home at Carpenters Brook Outdoors Days. they have donated fishing rods to youngsters and purchased archery equipment for Holy Cross Academy to participate in the National Archery in the Schools Program.the past several years he has been active in helping handicapped or ill hunters and fishermen realize their dreams. Gladstone’s Fish Disease Debate Gets Hotter

1329905359 66 Gladstone’s Fish Disease Debate Gets Hotter

According to reports, the sick fish controversy related with a particular fish species, known as barramund, has been again spotlighted by media.

Recently, a seafood processor proclaimed that the he did not agree with the regional authority's verdict of banning the fishing activities across the Gladstone Harbour central Queensland region.

The processor also declared that until, these Officials get some guaranteed confirmations regarding the controversy; they should not declare any ban announcements.

Meanwhile, the issue came to limelight after the region's health experts and several prominent scientists affirmed that that the Gladstone fish disease was speedily mounting.

However, immediately after the declaration all the scientists began to spotlight their planned medical strategies related with the parasitic flatworm.

The scientist stated that last year, due to heavy rains about 300 tones of barramundi's were dropped into the Boyne River and after that due to the lethal common saltwater parasite, several fish were found dead.

In the meantime, the regional fishery authorities were forced to perform a swept operation so that all the left alive fish could be saved.

Moreover, after the sweep operation, the area fishermen sold the fish at about 18 times greater than the original sale process.

Sharing his views about the issue, John Robertson, Queensland Fisheries scientist commented that yesterday instantly after the drop up and the unexpected temperature changes, the fish become more strained and vulnerable against the lethal diseases and parasites.

He added, "we think animals might be getting itchy with the parasite and trying to rub themselves, which opens up the skin (causing red rash-like marks and opening up a pathway for bacteria). further testing will verify that."

On the other hand, the Gladstone Ports Corporation's Officials continued their protest against the regional authorities as they believed that at any cost, the ban judgment should not be changed at all.

I suspect that animal clinic is a big part of the equation. I'm willing to present personal information into what I've learned pertaining to animal dermatology clinic. Whether you?e ?mbarking??on a new adventure, and need advice in kitten or puppy care; or you need to stay up-to-date with your dog or cat? Zwicker! Which can prevent early paralysis. Controlling aquarium algae – SentinelSource.com: Pets

1329902950 23 Controlling aquarium algae SentinelSource.com: Pets

Budding aquarium enthusiasts crop up every day. They’re anxiousto head to the pet store and pick out a tank, accessories and thefish they hope will thrive in a new environment.

While it’s important to know which fish can cohabitate and theproper pH and temperature to keep the tank, one important lessonall people who have an aquarium should know is how to keep algae incheck.

Algae is a naturally occurring plant life that creates a greenfilm on the inside of tank walls and on plants and decorationsinside the aquarium. Just like any other plant, algae requires afew things to thrive, including light, water and food.

Although a certain amount of algae in the water can be abeneficial food source for some species of fish, an overabundancecan be unsightly and take over the aquarium.

There are a few reasons why algae can grow unchecked.

  • Algae needs light to survive. Leaving a fluorescent aquariumlight on too long or placing the tank in the path of directsunlight can cause algae to bloom.
  • Introducing new live plants to a tank, which already may havealgae spores hitching a ride on them, can introduce more algae tothe tank.
  • Overfeeding fish can provide extra food sources for algae, ascan failing to frequently clean the filter.
  • Water with a high level of nutrients will provide a lot of foodfor algae.

Understanding why algae forms will help you control iteffectively. to start, get in the habit of cleaning the tankfrequently. once a week may be acceptable, depending on size.Scrape the walls of the aquarium down and remove the artificialplants and other accessories and routinely wash in clean water.Change the filter cartridge when it has become overly soiled.

Perform water changes. Change 10 to 15 percent of the water inthe aquarium every week, which will remove toxins and algae spores. When you change the water, use a suction tube to “vacuum” outdebris lodged in the gravel.

Limiting the food sources for algae can also keep it in check.Feed a scant amount of food to fish, only enough that they can eatin 5 minutes or so. If there is extra food floating around, removeit. the food contains phosphates and other nutrients that can be adelicious meal for algae. Keeping live plants in the tank isanother way to limit nutrients. Live plants will use many of thenutrients that algae thrive on. having less present means lessalgae and healthy aquarium plants.

Routinely test the levels in the water and know what the properlevels should be. In addition, know what your water levels areright out of the tap. Test for phosphates and nitrates. Usephosphate removers or another water source, if necessary.

Make sure to include algae-eating fish in the aquarium. Thoselike the Plecostomus (Pleco) will scour the tank for algae.

Position the tank out of direct sunlight, which will just fuelalgae growth. Also, go sparingly on the use of an aquarium light inthe tank.

Algae often grow in warm temperatures, as is common with tropicalaquariums. keep the temperature of the water at the minimum levelallowed for the breed of fish, and be sure the tank is not by aradiator or additional heat source.

Keeping aquarium fish can be an enjoyable hobby and a nice focalpoint for a room. to ensure the health of the tank, be sure tomanage the amount of algae in the aquarium.

It is definitely important that you know animal clinic inside and out. I've seen it happen over and over again with animal emergency clinic so there are always new forms of animal emergency clinic coming out. 62 guinea pigs, and counting

1329900574 87 62 guinea pigs, and counting

First things first: what are all their names? “Don’t get me started on names; it’s the bane of my life,” Jacky admits. “none of this was planned. I took a couple of cats home for a vet once and it spiralled from there. I’m lucky to have understanding neighbours, who leave cauliflower trimmings on the doorstep, and my friends are good at hamster-sitting.”

I arrive in the middle of a bunny blind-date (rabbits are rehomed in pairs) – and when Flopsy has finished fluttering her eyelashes at Cottontail, Jacky introduces some of her other residents. Amelia Pond (“quite lively”) was one of 29 hamster babies dumped in a park last September, while the Steptoe family (four “very naughty” guinea pigs) were rescued from an abandoned house in Sydenham.

Last week, two newcomers arrived, found in a box in Battersea with a note that read: “Two female gerbils, make lovely pets.”

“it makes me so angry – if they’re such lovely pets, why didn’t you keep them?” says Jacky. “More and more of these small animals are being dumped, so rescue centres are full to bursting.”

But why the recent increase? “all I know is it’s not the recession. People tell me they can’t afford to keep a guinea pig and then they pull up in a new Ferrari with leather seats. I think pet owners are becoming more callous – it is selfish and irresponsible to dump creatures at this time of year.”

The scourge of abandoned animals goes through cycles, Jacky explains. in the winter, more outdoor pets are rescued (“Smaller creatures don’t tend to be found alive in the cold”); whereas in the summer it’s hamsters and gerbils. other factors can also lead to neglect. Hundreds of guinea pigs were given up after the novelty of Disney film G-Force (starring the rodents as secret agents) wore off, while in 2003 Finding Nemo led to children “freeing” their pet goldfish by flushing them down the toilet.

“It’s a never-ending workload,” says Jacky, who juggles three jobs to fund GBH. “We have three volunteers, but the phone still rings off the hook.” Doesn’t she ever wish she had time for herself? “People are over-rated. when you hear how cruelly they treat their pets, it makes you hate people. I prefer animals.”

As she excuses herself to “read bedtime stories and sing the guinea pigs to sleep”, Jacky explains her centre’s unusual name. “I couldn’t bear the idea of another shelter called ‘Happy Endings’ or ‘TLC’. What the hell, I thought, I’ll call it GBH. that gets people’s attention.”

She grins. “you get a warped sense of humour doing this job. You’ve definitely got to be crazy, but then I can’t be too crazy because I know it’s mad – so I must still be a little bit normal, right?”

If this point could talk

1329899373 12 If this point could talk

Elva Spence says she has a rare familial gene that has caused heart troubles for most of her family, however listening to her colourful stories and reading them in her book, “Chronicles of Plum Point,” one would realize that she is a spry and healthy 75 year old that hasn’t missed a beat.

Another thing that she hasn’t missed over her years growing up in Plum Point is a good story, particularly one about the rich characters who originally settled in the town then known as Old Ferolle in 1898.

Mrs. Spence wrote her book over the winter months of 1993, as she dug into the annals of the town, met with long-time residents and recalled a lot of her own childhood, and has since sold all 300 copies.

“You see I had been doing some writing, just piddling around a bit,” she said, recalling her time as a gardening columnist for the Northern Pen in the 1980s.

“When I was 20 I took a few correspondence courses in newspaper writing but I couldn’t finish them because I had no way of earning money.”

She was originally encouraged to write the history of Plum Point when a researcher from Memorial University Extension Services realized the wealth of knowledge she had of the town, despite the little amount of documentation available.

Throughout her book, mrs. Spence recounts the harsh but simple way of life in Newfoundland in the early 20th century and how different things were compared to today’s modern age.

there was the brazen Henry Coombs, the town’s original patriarch who drove away the only other family on the point during settlement; the mysterious disappearance of Samuel Strangemore after the collapse of the fishing co-operative; and mrs Spence’s grandfather, Ken Spence, who was the first manager of the co-operative store.

The book evokes the town’s highlights over its years, such as the first teacher in 1921,who happened to be a nurse enlisted by Dr. Grenfell ,and the establishment of the International Pulp & Paper Company headquarters on the point.

However, mrs. Spence also recalls the darker points in the town’s history during the 1930s, otherwise known as the “nineteen hundred and no fish” years ,and the great Hurricane Edna in September 1951 that damaged much of the harbour and houses.

“This is a different world.” – Elva Spence

A lot has changed since then, said mrs. Spence.

“Until about 25 years ago, wherever you’d go there were children. Whenever you went up to Bird Cove the place would be lined with children.

“When the work in the woods and pulping finished, people had to go away to work. Most of the Bird Cove people went to Ontario and then from around here a good many went to Alberta.”

Mrs. Spence said that there was also a “complete change in transportation, complete change in communication and complete change in education,” since the first half of the 20th century.

Transportation was chiefly by boat in the summer and dog sled in the winter, which also carried the mail. The town only had one phone during its early years, which was stationed in the manager’s house.

The small one room school room is no longer around but mrs. Spence will go down in the town’s history as its first ever graduate of grade 11.

One particularly entertaining story she writes in her book describes a school teacher who came in to straighten out the unruly children by using his broom stick handle on the children to ensure results. mrs. Spence said he turned the school around and it didn’t fall back into poor standing until after he left.

Unfortunately, a copy of the manuscript for print could not be found by the Northern Pen, after printing operations moved to Corner Brook years ago.

When she isn’t keeping up her house, splitting wood, and keeping the wood stove stoked, mrs. Spence takes a few minutes to remember the days when life was straightforward and simple.

“This is a different world.”

Animal clinic does not need help. From cafes and restaurants for pet owners and their pampered wards, to salons and fashion stops for the four footed (and more); Californians can have no end to pet luxury. Lauren too hot for rivals with Chilli and Chang

1329897007 54 Lauren too hot for rivals with Chilli and Chang

LAUREN Blunsdon, from St Agnes, landed a duo of tickets with Ching Ching and Red Hot Chilli Stepper at the Hand Equestrian Centre, Bristol.

The Richard Lander schoolgirl qualified for the Hartpury College-based Blue Chip championships in April and the Pony of the Year show being held at Bury Farm, Bedfordshire in March.

  1. Kayla Setford from Redruth and Rosewall hi Flyer winners of the Blue Chip Sparkle JC/JA qualifier at the Grange Equestrian Centre. Picture by Kathryn Pearn

Lauren secured the first of her tickets in the Blue Chip Coral qualifier with her mother Cathy’s Red Hot Chilli Stepper.

This 11-year-old mare was originally purchased to produce and sell and came to Lauren with just £30 on her card.

The pair have continued to develop an excellent partnership since winning a supporting class at Hickstead and a coveted presentation rug at the end of last year.

Lauren said: “I’m really pleased with Heidi (Red Hot Chilli Stepper). She’s one of the most willing ponies I’ve sat on.”

Lauren also found the right form on her mother Cathy’s 14.1hh ten-year-old Irish bred gelding Ching Ching.

The pair emerged a close second behind Amy Inglis and Frere Jacques in the 30-strong British Showjumping 148cms Special to secure their passage to the Pony all Stars show.

Mother Cathy said: “It was pleasing to come home with two tickets. Ching has been a bit off colour lately and it’s great to see him coming back to form.

“Both Justin (Tuff) and Sophie Stockdale have been helping Lauren over the past few weeks and Peter Chitty warmed her up at the show.

“Both ponies jumped consistently and we’re now hoping to have a bit of luck in Hickstead qualifiers.”

Kayla Setford from Redruth recorded a top three placing in the JC/JA h’cap warm-up with Rosewall hi Flyer.

Earlier in the season, the 14-year-old from Lanner came close to clinching a winning double in the junior Blue Chip qualifiers at the Grange Equestrian Centre, Okehampton, emerging with the top ticket in the Blue Chip Sparkle JC/JA and the second placed qualification in the Horse Quest Pony Coral qualifier.

This Poole Academy pupil, opened her account in the Coral qualifier on Diptford Stardust before going one better to secure victory in the Sparkle on Rosewall hi Flyer.

Kayla, who trains with Zoe Gwennap, said: “Both my ponies have been incredibly consistent over the past few weeks,”

“Flyer’s jumping out of her skin and Rosie keeps clocking up clear rounds fulfilling my aim with her. We’ve recently bought a young horse and I did consider giving up the ponies but I’m confident I can combine both now.”

Kayla has carefully developed her partnership with the nine year-old Rosewall hi Flyer.

Kayla, who is a member of Cornwall’s junior show jumping academy, said: “Mum and dad (Karen and Tony) bought her for me just over a year ago,”

“We’ve really clicked and secured our foxhunter double clears for next year.”

Zoe Gwennap said: “Kayla works extremely hard and has grown in maturity.

“This shows up in her style, skills, understanding of the sport and overall finesse. She has been duly rewarded and I congratulate her on her continued success.”

Crantock Riding Club have organised a showjumping day on March 11 at Trenissick Stables, Cubert, Newquay, to help boost the reward being offered for information leading to the capture of the killer of Dawn Jewell’s Friesian stallion Erik.

The two year-old was savagely killed in a field at Stithians in what police called a “sickening” attack in January.

“The money will go towards the reward and we’re hoping that Dawn will come along to present the awards on the day,” said Becky King who is helping to organise the event.

“This was a shocking incident and showing how strong the equine community is in Cornwall everyone is coming together to support Dawn and to make our feelings of horror known.”

The showjumping day starts at 9.30am with clear round followed by a range of classes starting at 10.30am including 2ft; 2ft 3ins-2ft 6ins; 2ft 6ins-2ft 9ins.

For further details call Becky on 01637 830413.

Anyone with information about the Cornish attack can contact Devon and Cornwall Police on 101, quoting reference GP/12/66.

Submersible Aquarium Heater

1329895785 46 Submersible Aquarium Heater

Typical this item is a good buy and is a respectable purchase. First of all high-quality submersible aquarium heater. my thermometer indicates a temperature of 75f. I would say this is a very top aquarium heater. the heater does an outstanding job of keeping the temperature constant. Room temperatures fluctuate from 65f to 70f depending on when we are home or sleeping. my historic heater with a room temperature of 65f may possibly no longer bring the temperature above 72f. the hagen elite Submersible preset 100 watt heater kept my aquarium at the 75f mark easy when the room temperature turned into 65f.overall very happy with the heater. Does an remarkable job and is within 1 of the precise 76f atmosphere on the heater (my thermometer may possibly also be off by using +/- 1f).i Would counsel this heater to others and will have no hesitation purchasing any other when needed.another Giant plus is it has a lifetime warranty.update: 12-11-2011 still retaining temperature at 75f.this heater expenses almost $10 more at my local fish give store. I would tremendously counsel getting this buy awesome purchase.

It is critical to make the atmosphere inner the aquarium safe for the fishes. You will locate that it is no longer an convenient project to tend fishes as it requires dedication and patience. it indispensable that you be certain that ecosystem interior the aquarium is functioning properly. Fish must get the required give of oxygen and the aquarist need to assure the give of the comparable with the assist of a pump. Such a pump is essential device for the aquarium which can be bought along with the aquarium to ensure that you are ready to take care of the fish. it is of utmost necessity to preserve healthy ecosystem inside the aquarium.
